Senior Research Fellow, Rune Frederiksen, PhD, 1 January 2008 - 31 December 2010
Magister (2000) and PhD (2004) in classical archaeology from the University of Copenhagen and the Copenhagen Polis Centre. In 2003-2004
he was consultant for the Glyptothek (Copenhagen) at the project 'Middelhavshorisonten', and external lecturer at the University of Copenhagen. From 2004-2007 he held the Sackler Research Fellowship at the Ashmolean Museum and Worcester College, Oxford, where he updated the catalogue of plaster casts of ancient sculpture and prepared it for publication, curated the exhibition Treasures of the Ashmolean Museum, and co-organized an international conference on the role of plaster casts from antiquity to modern times.
He has taken part in a number of archaeological excavations and other field-missions since 1990, more recently the Danish-Greek excavations at Calydon (2002-3) and the Brown University excavations at Petra, Jordan (Great temple Excavations 2005).
His present project, From Village to City, funded by the Carlsberg foundation, is a major study of the urbanisation-process in ancient Greece between 1000 and 500 BC. The aim is to establish an overview of the development in settlements (their numbers, topography, size and major urban elements), and to attempt to identify the century in which the city becomes the dominant settlement type in the Greek culture.
He is preparing his PhD dissertation on the prevalence and architecture of Archaic Greek city walls for publication, and is co-editing the acts of the Oxford 2007 Plaster Cast Conference to be published soon as well.
